Turkey season is here. Here are seven great turkey gear items you’re going to want to drop some greenbacks on.

by Jace Bauserman

I was distracted. Dawn was still 45 minutes away, but birds were already calling. The nonstop gobbling made loading my vest, decoys, chairs, and other gear challenging. My impatient 20-year-old son stood ready, tapping his foot as he waited.

I’ve hunted wild turkeys in many states and taken every subspecies multiple times. They still give me chills, especially after a long winter. This was my first turkey hunt of 2026. I was like a kid at Christmas. My hands shook. I fumbled with my vest zippers and struggled with my headlamp. I couldn’t remember which button to press.

An hour later, two longbeards inched close to the decoys. I knew they would skirt the fakes. The lead tom caught me moving and was on alert. Had my son and I been in a ground blind, it would’ve been game over. The choice to go without a blind was mine. These days, how I kill a turkey is more important than just killing one. If you know, you know.

Two hours after getting busted, I was at full draw. Four toms came in hot. The sight of my bow-mounted tom decoy shifting behind a small cactus was too much for them. The lead tom was still coming at full tilt when my Sevr-tipped Easton arrow buried into his chest and exited perfectly out of his back.

Hunting turkeys without a ground blind—whether using standard decoys or a bow-mounted imposter—adds a new level of excitement. If you want to get out of the blind and boost your run-and-gun archery turkey game, the to-come gear items are must-haves.

ALPS Vanish MC

Comfort is critical. When I go with a standard decoy set and hunker back in the brush, I know I might be in the same spot for a long time. I want an ultra-low-profile chair with a comfortable seat and excellent back support. I get all of this in ALPS’ Vanish MC chair.

The Vanish MC chair weighs under 9 pounds. Its backrest height is 22.5 inches. The wide seat base adds comfort. Its folding design lets you quickly deploy or fold it for transport. The armrests are padded, and the bottom of the chair hugs the ground. The padded carry strap makes transport easy. The rotating feet keep you stable, even on uneven terrain.

The Vanish MC is my number one go-to turkey chair. The arm rests are perfectly sloped and don’t hinder my draw cycle. If you want a top-end, durable turkey chair with a powder-coat, no-shine steel frame, this is the chair for you.

Ultimate Predator Stalker Turkey Decoy

There are several bow-mounted turkey decoys on the market. All fall short of the performance UPG’s Stalker Turkey provides. Available in MerRio and Eastern options, the Stalker Turkey Decoy features a built-in shooting window. This window provides arrow clearance. It also allows the bowhunter to operate fully concealed behind the decoy.

The Stalker Turkey Decoy weighs less than 11 ounces. It deploys and folds up in seconds, and attaches to the top and bottom limb pockets. The decoy does come with attachment Velcro. I recommend, depending on your bow model, the Stalker Spider Wraps or Stalker Quick Connect attachment devices.

The decoy is extremely realistic. Take precautions when using it. This is not the decoy to use on public land during shotgun season. Always think safety first. I’ve used the MerRio and Eastern Stalker Turkey Decoys for five years. The fabric is durable and UV-free. It dries quickly.

The closest I’ve ever shot a wild turkey using a Stalker Decoy was three yards. The bird kicked up dirt onto my knees when the arrow splashed through it and it turned to run. These decoys bring a heightened level of intensity when bowhunting wild turkeys.

Chêne Gear Decepiton Leafy Jacket

Leafy jackets have always been part of my turkey clothing arsenal. In recent years, most outdoor clothing manufacturers have discontinued leafy models. I was thrilled to see Chêne add the Deception Leafy Jacket to its 2026 clothing lineup.

The Deception Leafy Jacket comes in sizes between Small and 3XL. It is available in Mossy Oak Full Foliage and Bottomland. Natural cover is sparse during spring greenup. This uninsulated, ultra-light jacket goes over a base layer or heavy outer layer. It uses 3D camo elements to absolutely disrupt your outline. The cuffs are tight on the wrists. The adjustable hood and hem let the bowhunter achieve a custom fit.

This jacket makes you invisible in the woods. The 62 GSM polyester mesh is comfortable and breathable. It is printed on both sides to prevent white spots. The leaf pattern was hand-drawn, and the leaf material lets the leaves stand up without flapping or making noise, even in heavy wind.

Chêne Gear Deception Turkey Vest

Don’t let the $350 price tag make you break out the anti-anxiety pills. This is the last turkey vest you will ever own. Chêne built its Deception Turkey Vest to last, and its functional, lightweight build without the bulk makes it ideal for run-and-gun longbeard missions. Every pocket has a purpose, and you’ll love the backpack-style storage options that will hold a decoy, hydration bladder, and extra turkey essentials. Foam padding along the shoulders and back adds all-day wear comfort, and the front dual-adjustable straps with magnetic-guided clasps ensure an exact fit. With this vest, there is no slop. It holds tight to the body, and the drop-down seat is one of the most comfortable seats that I have used.

Kifaru Deluxe Bino Harness

In early March, I wrote a First Look piece about Kifaru’s Deluxe Bino Harness. I was impressed with it from the get-go, and that hasn’t changed. The under $200 Deluxe Bino Harness comes in bucket sizes Small, Medium, and Large and in colors Ranger Green, MultiCam Black, and Coyote Brown. I opted for the Mesa Harness for added support. The Deluxe Bino Harness comes with a rangefinder pouch and accessory pouch. These are not sold-seperate items, and that matters to me. The harness holds tight to the chest, and the adjustable hood allows easy, one-handed operation.

I never thought I’d discover a bino harness system I liked better than my longtime go-to, Marsupial’s Enclosed Binocular Harness, but I did. The Medium-sized bucket holds my Zeiss Victory SF 10×42 binos tightly and keeps them protected. The fabric is bulletproof, and the purposefully placed pockets let me get to my handheld release, locator call, etc., in the blink of an eye.

Fenix HM70R Headlamp

I kill a lot of public-land turkeys run-and-gun style because I get to destinations in the dark before other hunters. If you’re willing to work and wander, you’ll find and harvest off-the-beaten-path birds. One of my biggest go-deep-and-far problems was light. I could never find the right headlamp. That changed this year.

Fenix’s HM70R Rechargeable Headlamp offers eight modes ranging from 1600 lumens to 30 lumens. The polycarbonate lens material is tough as nails, and the included 21700 rechargeable Li-ion battery lasts. The headband and overhead band are adjustable and comfortable, and the main housing pivots up and down so you can put light where you need it.

I appreciate the large, glove-friendly on/off button. Push and hold the button to gain access to the main white light. Click the button to toggle between four white light settings. To go from the main white light to Functional mode, push and hold the on/off button. The Functional mode provides a red reading light, red flash, and two levels of neutral light. The headlamp rides nicely, doesn’t flop around, and the vented strap dries quickly.

Irish Setter VaprTrek

Tall rubber boots are popular with the turkey crowd. There are times and places I use them, but whenever possible, especially when I know I’ll be covering lots of ground quickly, I opt for a durable, lightweight, comfortable mid-height boot. I’ve used Irish Setter’s VaprTrek since last fall, and the 8-inch-tall leather boot continues to impress me.

The Trout Brook Leather is soft but durable and will stand up to the most extreme environments. Boots that feel more like an excellent pair of trail running shoes, the uninsulated VaprTrek uses ENERG high-rebound materials that help put some spring in your step. The outsole features ground-grabbing lugs, and UltraDry construction combines a moisture-management lining with waterproof components to keep your feet dry.

I could continue to pull more facts and technologies from Irish Setter’s website, but that will do you no good. Like all the gear items in this article, you need to experience these hyper-light, ultra-comfortable boots to fully appreciate them.

Final Thoughts

I’m hard on gear. This spring, I will spend at least 50 days in the field chasing gobbles. If a gear item disappoints or doesn’t meet my expectations, I discard it. The seven items in this article will remain in my turkey gear arsenal this spring and for many springs to come.
