Many of us cut our hunting/shooting teeth on an air rifle. I can’t remember the name or brand, but I shot my pump-up air rifle so much that I actually shot the barrel out. I didn’t think that was possible. When I started seeing BBs cut harder than a major league slider, I got suspicious. An inspection showed that over years and thousands and thousands of shots, BBs had cut a channel in the barrel.

When I discovered a .22 LR and later, a 20-gauge shotgun, my air-rifle pursuits for starlings, squirrels, and rabbits stopped. For years, air guns didn’t excite me at all. I had shotguns, bolt-action rifles, and bows. What did I need an air rifle for?

A few years ago, at a family Thanksgiving, I noticed one of my cousins plinking on the farm range. The shots were quiet, but I could hear the deep thud of whatever bullet he was shooting when it hit plywood. He was on the 100-yard bench. I jogged to my truck, set up my spotter, and noticed a sub-2-inch 100-yard group. Then, I noticed the single-shot break-action rifle was an air rifle. I was impressed.

Air rifles have come a long way in recent years. Hunters use them for big-game practice because of their low recoil and low cost. Recreational shooters use them because they’re awesome, accurate, and don’t require an FFL or special licensing. Small-game hunters have discovered that .177, .22, and .25 caliber air rifles are perfect for small-game hunting. I have several buddies who’ve killed numerous coyotes and hogs with air rifles.

Gamo is one of the hottest companies in the air-rifle arena. Gamo keeps pushing the envelope, and each year they seem to launch a new air rifle that trumps its predecessor. Here’s Gamo’s new-for-2026 air rifle, plus a few other Gamo options to consider if you’re in the market for a new air rifle.

The Newbie: Swarm Magnum Pro GEN3i

This is the next generation of Gamo’s Swarm Series of pellet rifles. The new Swarm Magnum Pro GEN3i delivers speed, accuracy, and the field/range performance serious shooters demand. The all-new Swarm Magnum promises smoother operation and improved accuracy, plus patent-pending 10X GEN3i Technology in a revolutionary new horizontal inertia-fed magazine integration that makes it lighter, more compact, and low-profile. Recoil indexes the magazine, which creates a more precise breech-loading process. Gamo’s shiny new penny features a new stock that combines a traditional hunting stock design with the automotive-grade glass-filled nylon materials. The forearm, grip, and cheek piece are non-slip, delivering excellent cheek weld and remarkable control in any conditions.

Swarm Magnum Pro: Favorite Features

The Swarm Magnum Pro’s standout feature is the 10X GEN3i horizontal inertia-fed magazine system. By using the rifle’s recoil energy to index the magazine, the process is incredibly smooth and precise, enabling rapid multishot performance and eliminating the need for manual reloading between shots. I am also impressed by the robust construction of the automotive-grade glass-filled nylon stock, which ensures durability in any weather. The non-slip texturized panels on the grip, forearm, and cheek piece provide superior control. In contrast, the IGT Mach 1 gas piston and oversized 33 mm cylinder provide truly magnum-level power and velocity.

The CAT trigger is another welcome feature. It lets you adjust the first and second stages independently so that you can tune the pull to your preference. A crisp, predictable trigger matters when you’re trying to make a precise shot on a small target.

Swarm Magnum Pro: Caliber Performance

.22 Caliber: The powerhouse configuration, the Swarm Magnum Pro is engineered to launch .22 pellets at speeds reaching up to 1,300 fps with alloy ammunition. It delivers high energy downrange, making it an excellent choice for serious hunters targeting small game like squirrels, rabbits, and raccoons.

.177 Caliber: For shooters prioritizing velocity, the .177 caliber option is a screamer. Capable of hitting 1,650 fps with alloy pellets, this caliber offers an incredibly flat trajectory. It is exceptionally accurate, providing the precision needed for pest control applications and target practice where long-range impact is the goal.

Get A Kit: Swarm Evo 10X Gen3i Kit .22

The Swarm Evo 10X GEN3i is a break-barrel air rifle built around one handy idea: spend less time reloading and more time shooting. Its 10X GEN3i horizontal magazine uses the rifle’s recoil to index the next pellet, letting you take up to 10 shots before you need to reload.

This .22-caliber kit is designed to get you started without having to piece together the basics. It includes the rifle, two 10-shot magazines, a Gamo 4×32 scope, 100 Rocket pellets, and 50 paper targets. Plus, like most Gamo products, the kit is currently on sale on Gamo’s website for under $230. That is a small price to pay for a ready-to-go kit that will provide loads of fun.

The Swarm Evo 10X Gen 3i Kit .22 makes a convenient package for plinking and practice, as well as for suitable small-game or pest-control use where permitted.

The Swarm Evo also includes Gamo’s IGT gas piston, which replaces a traditional spring with a pneumatic cylinder for smoother operation and reduced vibration. Its Whisper Maxxim system is designed to reduce the rifle’s report, while the adjustable two-stage C.A.T. trigger lets you tune the trigger pull. The RRR rail is intended to reduce recoil shock to the scope.

This kit’s .22 caliber is a practical choice when you want a heavier pellet than a typical .177 setup. The included scope and targets make it easier to get started with sighting in and practicing your shot groups. As always, the rifle’s actual performance depends on pellet choice and shooting conditions; follow local laws and use safe backstops.

The Workhorse: Swarm DX .22

Like the other Swarm models we’ve covered, the Swarm DX .22 lets you fire multiple pellets before reloading, thanks to its 10-shot rotary magazine. Just break the barrel, take your shot, and the magazine advances for a fast follow-up. You won’t believe how fast you can reload, get back on target, and resend. Your buddy will still be fumbling in his can of pellets, while you’re lighting up paper, steel, feather, and fur.

Gamo lists velocities of up to 1,000 fps with .22-caliber alloy pellets. The rifle uses an IGT gas piston instead of a traditional spring, designed to reduce vibration and provide smoother, more consistent operation. The Whisper Maxxim system uses dual noise-dampening chambers to reduce the report. The Whisper Maxxim system is not a silencer. The rifle is not completely silent, and your pellet choice affects sound. However, it is very quiet, which matters when slipping through the woods to drop squirrels from trees.

The olive-green synthetic stock has rubber inserts at the grip, forearm, and cheek rest for a more secure hold. For tuning the shot, the C.A.T. trigger lets you independently adjust its first and second stages. The rifle also comes with a shockproof 4×32 scope and mounting rings, so it includes basic optics.

One practical caveat: the listing says this model is currently out of stock. It’s one of Gamo’s all-time best sellers. Its advertised performance and features make it a versatile option for target practice and appropriate pest-control use, subject to local laws and safe shooting practices.
