Make traveling to hunt easy with MTM Case-Gard’s ACDC50 and Easton’s BowTruk.

by Jace Bauserman
Traveling to hunt is gaining in popularity. Hunters want to broaden their horizons and seek new adventures, hunting various game species in different locales. I travel to hunt a lot. Over the past 30 years, I’ve hunted in 30-plus states and five different countries, and I’ve learned a thing or two. Traveling to bowhunt isn’t easy. There’s a lot of planning that goes into it. Some of the most critical travel-to-hunt items are cases/gear boxes that you’ll put your pricy gear in. You need to be picky when it comes to this.

I recently returned from a turkey tour. The first leg was an 11-hour drive from my home in southeast Colorado to northcentral South Dakota. After the South Dakota hunt, my oldest son, Hunter, drove me to Bismarck, North Dakota, where I hopped on a United Airlines flight to Portland, Oregon. When I landed in Portland, my good buddy and BH contributor Scott Haugen picked me up, and we drove 8 hours to Grand Coulee, Washington to hook up with Austin Moser, owner of Northwest Adventures. After sticking a big Merriam gobbler, Haugen and I headed south to his home near Eugene, Oregon, to battle birds in the Pacific Northwest.

I realize that the last paragraph is a lot to chew on, and that’s the point. Traveling to hunt takes serious preparation and planning. Stop and think for a moment how much gear this turkey tour required. Because I was flying, much of that gear had to be consolidated.

Here’s what I used to tote 10 days of turkey gear.

MTM ACDC50 – Ammo Crate Divided Utility Box

I don’t go hunting, close to home or to a far-flung destination, without at least one MTM Case. MTM Cases are durable, cost-effective, and make organizing gear items easy. I’ve used a lot of them, and I’ve never experienced a single product failure.

I know you read the headline, and I know what you’re thinking: You use an ammo box to haul outdoor gear?

Absolutely!

Why?

MTM’s ACDC50 comes with three dividers but for this hunt, I removed those dividers to create a single open space. Inside case dimensions are 23.6” x 13” x 6.5”, and the case will handle up to 85 pounds. It will actually handle more, I promise. I love the slim, low-profile design, and trio of watertight locking latches adds an appreciated level of security.

I’ve used lots of MTM Cases, from the Truck Underseat Gear Crate to the Mule Mobile Gear Crate to smaller ammo storage boxes. I’ve never had one break, and I love that most of the gear and ammo crates are stackable. When you find products that are functional and improve your outdoor life, you stick with them. For me, MTM Case-Gard ammo and gear cases are essential items.

Here’s my complete storage list of turkey gear I placed in MTM’s ACDC 50:

  • Kill Kit
  • Bowstring wax
  • Garmin inReach MINI 2
  • Stocking cap
  • Four pairs of socks
  • Four pairs of underwear
  • T-shirt
  • Oversized KUIU decoy bag
  • Hat
  • Headlamp
  • Three boxes (10 per box) turkey shotshells
  • Four Strikers
  • Two pot-and-peg calls
  • Broadheads
  • GoPro and GoPro Mounts
  • Electrical tape
  • Lighter
  • First aid kit
  • Face mask
  • Two pairs of gloves
  • Hoody
  • Hunting pants
  • Hunting baselayers
  • Arrow puller
  • Pruning shears
  • Multi-tool
  • Replacement knife blades
  • Blue pen

Travel To Hunt And Don’t Worry About Your Gear

I was able to fit all of this in a single box with some room to spare. MTM gear and ammo boxes keep me organized and ready to get out the door at a moment’s notice.

Rugged and ready, the ACDC50 is molded from reinforced polypropylene, making it surprisingly lightweight yet built to take a beating — perfect for hauling or long-term storage. A water-resistant O-ring seal keeps dust and moisture out, keeping your ammo and gear dry no matter the weather. Two lock tabs stop tampering in its tracks, and four tie-down points make strapping it to an ATV effortless.

Stackable and space-smart, this utility crate is made in the USA and engineered for real-world use. Whether you’re sorting range rounds, packing for a hunt, or assembling survival kits, the ACDC50 delivers the durability and versatility to keep your kit protected and ready.

After reading the contents list in my MTM ACDC50, you know I had to have another way to transport more gear. That way was Easton’s BowTruk Travel Bow Case Gen 2.

Travel To Hunt And Don’t Worry About Your Gear

What I love most about this case is that I don’t have to take a second luggage item like a travel bow hardcase. After transferring a few gear items from my MTM ACDC50 to my Bow Case Gen 2, I had every single item I needed for my Washington/Oregon turkey hunt.

Don’t let this soft bow case fool you. It is tank-tough and has protected my bows on hunts around the world. Easton engineers paid attention to every detail, and no stone was left unturned. The outer shell is made of TPU-coated 1680D ballistic nylon, the same material used in military-grade body armor. I’ve watched anti-hunting TSA agents treat this case brutally. It’s funny what you see if you’re paying attention when plane luggage is open. The outer shell of my BowTruk is as good as the day it arrived on my doorstep. If the outside is good, you know the inside is mint.

The case comes with three Outside-In pockets that make key compartments accessible. There is an arrow pocket, and myMTM BH-18S-09 – Compact Arrow Case fits perfectly in it. The Gen 2 will accommodate two bows up to 47 inches, and all internal gear is protected by dense 360-degree exterior padding. Double seatbelt-style bow retainment straps hold your compounds tight, and the BowTruk comes in three sizes: 47″ x 16″ (4716), 40″ x 17″ (4017), & 36″ x 16″ (3616). Easton also offers a 4017 version that is two inches wider to ensure bowhunters and target archers don’t have to remove longer dovetail bow sights.

Final Thoughts

Cases aren’t sexy. They don’t get much attention and often get overlooked. However, if you plan to travel to hunt, and I highly recommend that you do, gear storage boxes and travel gear like bow and gun cases are necessary.
